Last year when I did the Seroogy’s 15k Valentine Run, I did it for the chocolate at the finish. This year, being a vegan, I wasn’t really sure why I flung myself out of bed at 4:00 AM to drive 2.5 hours to De Pere, WI. Why? Whyyy??!!
For one, I wanted to go back and PR that course since I was in a run-funk last year. Last year I finished in 1:29:31, I knew I could do better than that!
Besides the running part, it was a chance to get away from home improvement projects and spend time with my best longtime friends. The girl who inspired me to try vegan eating has recently taken an interest in running 5ks. She did her first 5k last October, and it was a huge deal. This is a girl who has flat out refused to run ever. She hates it, she “can’t” do it, it’s awful, etc, etc. It sure made my morning warm to see her at the starting line in 10 degrees, bundled up, and ready to take on her second 5k race.
I also had the company of Becca who keeps getting better and better at this whole running thing. She has an unstoppable will, and keeps pushing her limits further and further. And why not push those limits in a pink tu-tu?
The warmth of being with these lovely ladies stayed with me through this race. I ran comfortably strong, enjoyed the beauty of the day, the frost glistening off of tree branches, and the pitter patter of hundreds of other runners around me. I finished in 1:21:30, an 8 minute PR!
With that PR, I got a frosty face!
And a photo with a bunny!
After a fun weekend with friends, it’s clear to me why I got out of bed at 4:00 AM to drive 2.5 hours to De Pere, WI. And yes, it was absolutely worth it.

That’s a great PR!!! Congrats! It looks absolutely frigid though. At least you had your friends to keep you warm.

I could see just fine.. It was comical, everyone else looked like that too. I was just really hoping that it would last until the finish so I could get a photo taken!
